Vegan Besan Laddoo

Besan Laddoo is one of the popular Indian Sweets. Traditionally , Besan Laddoo is made using Chickpea flour and clarified butter or Ghee. Chickpea flour is called Besan in Hindi. Laddoo means small balls or bites. It is a gluten-free sweet.

Last year, for Diwali, I tried making Besan Laddoos by using olive oil. The taste was exactly the same as traditionally made laddos. I am sure you will love this sweet.

Key for making this recipe is to roast besan on low flame, till it becomes golden colored and turns aromatic.

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Chickpea flour1 Cup
Powdered Sugar½ Cup
Oil-Olive Oil or Refined Oil¼ Cup and 1 tbsp
Cardamom Powder2 Tbsp
Pistachio/cashew/raisins (Optional)6-7 pieces

Recipe:

  • In a  thick bottom pan, add besan
  • On a low flame, start roasting besan
  • Add 2 tbsp. of oil
  • Keep on stirring continuously without stopping
  • Keep on adding 2 tbsp. of oil at intervals
  • Continue roasting till the besan turns aromatic
  • The color should change from light yellow to golden brown
  • Let it cool completely
  • Add powdered sugar and cardamom powder
  • If needed add a tablespoon of warm oil
  • Make round laddoo
  • Garnish with a pistachio or cashew or a raisin

Tips:

  • There are two different varieties of besan available in the market-Fine and coarse besan
  • Coarse besan gives a slightly crunchy texture after roasting
  • Use fresh flour for making Laddoos
  • Besan may taste  bitter in taste as it becomes old
